I'm sure it varies greatly, but if you are talented and can find the work (two big ifs), there's no reason you shouldn't be able to bring in 6 figures. You just have to be aware, that there are a lot of things you have to take care of yourself when you are self-employed. Health insurance is a big one....if you have had any health problems in 10 years, don't count on getting health insurance. The plans for self employed people generally have high deductibles and co-pays. Prescriptions will generally cost you more, and dental insurance...well suffice to say I usually end up having to pay for all my dental work (right now I need a root canal...uggh, major expense). Taxes will be more complicated and may require a CPA, and you usually have to register your business, the fees for that vary according to how you decide to organize. You have to deal with legal issues yourself (generally a good idea to have something like errors and omissions coverage to protect against getting sued by an unhappy client). Don't forget to save for retirement (no matching like you often get with a company) and if you would like to attend conventions like CFUnited or further your education, that's all on your dollar now. Basically, deciding to freelance is more than just looking at how much you can make.
