It depends on your skill set.  If you just want to be a code monkey and
write code and get paid, stick with a regular job.  The decent money is made
in consulting with companies that have no idea what they want or how to do
what they want.  In those cases, your real value comes out in helping them
to formulate a solution to their problems (using tools you're familiar and
comfortable with, of course).  At that point, you can build it for them
yourself and get paid, or fish the actual code out to someone less savvy
than you (i.e. the cut-rate coders in India or wherever).  If you can get
involved with a company that is just getting started and they have good
ideas then you may even be able to work out an equity share.  If you're
architecting solutions and helping them define what they actually need you
can do pretty well for yourself and not spend every waking moment writing
code.
