I have a bit of trouble with that as well. Given the history of how civil rights, abolitionism etc have been mostly coming from the "left" and have been lead by mostly religious leaders I cannot see what the left's general view on Christianity is.
Its quite irritating how the right has usurped devout Christianity and has made Christianity its tool for political power. Especially given Jesus' prescriptions on feeding the hungry, healing the sick and clothing the poor for instance. I suspect that if he were on the earth today he'd be attacked by the right wing as a socialist.
