According to the media media, the real cash cow is the late news sandwiched between those 2 shows.
That is where the money is made. The morning shows and news are also very important. They were prepared for a drop off, but not the free fall it has become. The 10:00 primetime shows are supposed to be good enough to have people on the channel at 11:00 for the news. And the following comedy show is supposed to be good enough for people to go to bed with that channel on (so the TV is tuned to it in the morning first thing). Most viewers only watch the Tonight Show for 15 minutes or less. The problem is, the primetime numbers are so bad, it is affecting the news revenue. And even when people watch the news, most change the channel to something else (like Letterman, who is whomping them) before bed, and they are seeing the signs of a shift away from the morning news and Morning Show.
