Japan during the second world war had a very different philosophy from
Buddhism - Bushido, or rather a perversion of Bushido derived from
Shinto. At the time the official religion in Japan was Shinto, with
Buddhism practiced by only about 40% of the populace. I remember
reading somewhere (I'll have to dig up the reference) that there was a
degree of active persecution of Buddhism in the late 30's through to
the end of the war.
