We lost a good friend on highway 17 when he traveled too fast for
conditions and hit one of the bridge abutments. The problem is, if you
want to travel north from Santa Cruz, 17 is the best route. Highway 9
is a narrow, winding mountain road, Highway 1 is a narrow, winding
coast road that takes you miles out of the way. I would give thought
to moving to Santa Cruz if this was not the case. As is, I'm dealing
with 2 miles of winding mountain road at this point just to get to
town, but it's not as bad as any of the Santa Cruz routes.
