They also have to charge enough to pay the office staff that is required to
deal with all the crap from the insurance companies.

The problem with doctor's rates is rarely greed on the doctor's part.
They're required to carry malpractice insurance which, thanks to our
sue-happy society, is insanely expensive. They're also required by the
insurance companies to charge a minimum fee for given services otherwise
insurance won't pay for it, but that's another problem entirely.

I know this because a huge chunk of my family is in the medical field. So
much so that I often feel left out of the conversation at family get
togethers because I'm not in a medicine related field. Still I pay
attention. Medicare doesn't come close to paying enough for doctors to make
a living after their expenses. They make a profit on it, sure, but if all
they had were medicare patients they'd be living on ramen noodles.

Not commenting on Obama's package. I still haven't read it. I figure the
rest of my family has enough of an opinion on it that I don't need one.
