That one is pretty easy, I'm surprised you even have to ask. They
showed up to write a governing document for a whole country, not a
single colony. They needed to find a way to unite everyone in the face
of overwhelming odds and they did that by admitting that they were,
first and foremost, human beings and Americans and that that was what
was important. There was no agreement amongst the colonies about a
religious test for office, a national religion, an official motto...in
a time of great tribulation, they bound together for the common good
and set aside those things which sought to divide them including,
first and foremost, religion.

Religious mandates will never unite this country, they can only divide
it. That was recognized almost 250 years ago and is still true today.
Those that try to pretend otherwise seek to tear our country apart and
are no true Americans.
