"They showed up to write a governing document for a whole country, not a
single colony. They needed to find a way to unite everyone in the face
of overwhelming odds and they did that by admitting that they were, first
and foremost, human beings and Americans and that that was what
was important. "

Sure, that was important. That doesn't address the issue though. Were they
representatives of the states? If so, that would indicate with high
probability that they were Protestants. This in turn means that the
majority of the founding fathers were Protestant.

Also, it is important to note that the unity of the colonies was a goal, but
it was also a goal to protect each colony's individual rights. This was
just as important or even more important. See the tenth amendment: “The
powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor
prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or
to the people.”

"There was no agreement amongst the colonies about a religious test for
office, a national religion, an official motto...in a time of great
tribulation, they bound together for the common good and set aside those
things which sought to divide them including, first and foremost, religion."

There was no test. However, was one even needed. When Obama meets with his
cabinet, does he need to ask if they want to destroy capitalism in our
country? Or is it just assumed. When the founding fathers met, was it
just assumed that everyone was a Protestant? If so, then it means setting
aside differences had to do more with Lutheran vs Presbyterian vs Quaker
than Islam vs Judaism vs Christianity.

"Religious mandates will never unite this country, they can only divide it."

I don't have a problem with this. I love the fact that we have church's,
synagogues, mosques, and so on. I love the fact that we have congressmen
who are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, atheist, and so on. Our
diversity has the potential to make us very strong.

"That was recognized almost 250 years ago and is still true today. Those
that try to pretend otherwise seek to tear our country apart and are no true
Americans."

This is true if you're talking about a variety of different religions or if
branches of one religion.
