The US defense is really pretty good, in my opinion. More solid and consistent than their front line, which is fast and has flashes of brilliance but not a consistent attack. They'll play mostly a counterattack game, which should work fairly well against England who is trending down from their best years but certainly would be trouble against a team that can mount a consistent, sustained attack like Spain or Brazil or the Netherlands.
And speaking of defense, Tim Howard is probably the best goalie in the World Cup this year (and also plays for Everton. Don't forget all your Everton boys!). I think that the US-England game will be key and will will be within a goal of one another, I'm guessing a 1-1 tie. The US has shown good conditioning and pace but England has been on a tear, winning 9 out of their 10 warmup games. Both teams have had injuries, England's more concerning, but it should be a hard fought match. I expect both teams to go through to the next round but the key will be who comes out first as the 2nd place is likely to face Germany who always bring it come World Cup time. Which ever team comes out first has a favorable matchup in the 2nd round and looks good to go through to the round of 8.
