The only real hope for the country is that the presence of these
minerals will help forge the political will to govern the country well
and use the proceeds from the mineral rights to create a decent
country. What I think is more likely to happen is a decades-long
exploitation, with a handful of very corrupt politicians taking huge
bribes to hand over these valuable assets to the highest bidder,
probably China at this point. And since the Chinese government doesn't
give a rat's ass about human rights, you can see where that will lead.
More misery for average Afghans, unfortunately.
