I've seen this story floating around on a couple of sites. I thought I
would share it.

The town of Bell CA has a population of roughly 38,000 people. It is
located approximately 10 miles from down-town LA. According to the 2000
census, 90% of the population is of Hispanic background. Over 50% of the
population is foreign born. The per capita income is half the average of
the US.

Recently, the LA Times investigated the town pay structure for officials.

The interesting things that were found follow:

The police chief Randy Adams makes $457,000 per year, which is 50% more than
Charlie Beck, the police chief of Los Angeles, makes.
The town's Chief Administrative Office, Robert Rizzo, makes $787,637 per
year.
The town's Assistant City Manager, Angela Spaccia, makes $376,288 per year,
which is more than most city managers in other CA towns.
The city council members each make $100,000 per year. Cities of similar
size pay an average of $4,800 per year to their council members.

As these numbers have been made public, the citizens of Bell have become
quite testy. They are calling for resignation and prosecutions. I think
they might be on to something. I mean, it's not like there is a recession
in CA or that there are better uses for tax dollars. Right?
