Personally, if you're coming to Disney for the primary purpose of going to
the parks, nothing beats staying "on-property" at one of their resorts. If
there is one thing Disney knows how to do it's move people around. Once you
park your car at the hotel there is no reason to go back to it until you're
ready to leave. They have a massive bus system that visits all of the
hotels and parks very regularly (at least every 20-30 minutes in my
experience). If you stay at a hotel off-property and drive to the parks
you'll generally have to pay for parking when you get there and drive away
tired from a day of walking. A lot of the hotels also have busses that make
runs to the parks, but not nearly as often as Disney's network, so you may
have to leave the parks at a certain time. Check with the hotels about how
frequently they run busses to be sure.

If you're planning other adventures in Orlando, then an off-property hotel
may work better as a base of operations. There is also Universal Studios,
Islands of Adventure, Sea World, Busch Gardens (in Tampa, about an hour
away), and tons of other vacation-type stuff to do around Orlando.

If you have time, a visit to Kennedy Space Center can be a lot of fun as
well (it's right off I-95 not far from the I-4 exit you'll take to Disney).

See how many "south of the border" billboards you can count on your way down
and back, hehe.
