We always schedule a stop at the Claxton Fruitcake Factory in Claxton, GA on
the trip south. Worth the detour from the highway.

On the west coast of Florida, just north of Tampa, is Tarpon Springs. The
sponge diving, with tour boats, museums, and a whole town embracing the
industry, is pretty cool for kids. And with the popularity of Sponge Bob,
understandable for kids, too. Neat science and biology.

North of Tarpon Springs a score of mile is Weeki Wachee, where they have
mermaid shows, with "real live mermaids". They also have a great boat ride
down along a spring-fed river, seeing all the native coastal wildlife.

North of Weeki Wachee a dozen miles is Homosassa Springs, where they have a
wonderful wildlife refuge including dozens of manatees. That for me is the
quintessential Old Florida.
