I think truthfully that it is simpler than all that.

In a trying economy, many people retrench to "mine".

And many people use race as a "mine vs theirs" determining factor.

In an expanding economy, where there is plenty of pie for everyone, people
tend to be more magnanimous, forgiving, and able to see past small family
groups.

I truly believe that most of our current political problems are directly
related to "the economy, stupid".

If we ever get that engine righted, a lot of the intrusive government will
fall away (as people have less time to snoop, too busy counting their money
and shopping for a bigger TV at Walmart), racial and ethnic and immigration
issues ease, violence goes down, and all becomes sweetness and light.

Ah, can you tell it is Friday after a long, long week?
