Sure, I'd say that there is a difference between having an ethical stance and a general disagreement. I have a general agreement that one of the functions of government is taxation to provide for the common welfare and that one of those methods should include an income tax. Do I agree with all the tax policy in our government? Hell no. I pay income tax under Republicans and Democrats as a result, whether or not I agree with their tax policy. In the case of Social Security, Medicare, the Stimulus plan, etc, a large portion of the opposition is couched in explicitly moral/ethical language. It isn't something reasonable like, "I don't think that the price tag on this bill is worth the benefit it will provide". I can understand (and often agree) with opposition like that. Instead, I hear a lot of cries of Socialism! and Government Takeover! and Welfare State! The opposition explicitly says that it is not a proper function of the government to engage in X, Y or Z. Sometimes they mean the Federal government, sometimes they mean all government. That's fine if that's how you feel, but I expect logical follow through on those stances. If you have a fundamental belief that HOAs not only suck but are unethical, I'd expect you to do whatever you can to not live in one. If you feel like it is not the role of the HOA/City/whatever to provide garbage service and it is contrary to their mission and that people should haul their own garbage, yeah, I'd expect you to take your own garbage to the dump.
