Skin color was not the distinguishing trait they went by, it was more family
lines.

Some of those families were from the south.
Some of those families were from the east.
Some of those families were from the west.
Not many were from the north, way back when.

Some of those family lines were clearly what we today think of as "Arab",
and some were clearly what we think of today as "Black".

But most of them were just trying to get by, and attempted to associate with
whatever group held the reins at that particular moment.

I don't know that our nice little modern boxes would have fit them all that
well.
