Depends on who you ask ;-) If MD were to leave Judaism, most orthodox Jews would still consider him Jewish simply on the Basis that the female members of his family are Jewish. I am considered Jewish by them because my grandmother was Jewish, which makes my mother Jewish which in turn, makes me Jewish. If I were to convert to Judaism, there are rituals that I wouldn't have to do because of that, which you would have to go through G because you do not have the "lineage".
They are part of a race...the same race that also spawned the Arabs and a few other peoples like the non-Arab Palestinians (aka Canaanites).
