Put it another way: the current incarnation of "free market"
capitalism in the United States has worked, in purely economic terms,
only somewhat better than its bitter ideological rival, communism. We
don't actually have a free market capitalist economic system, and we
haven't for decades. We have a managed economy - managed by the Fed,
managed by Congress, managed by the Presidency. Guess what? It turns
out trying to manage the economy has been an exercise in futility
under our current system of rules. Maybe it's time to tear up the
current rules and start over from first principles.
