Reminds me of the scene in Big Daddy when Adam Sandler decided he's
going to let his kid wear whatever he wants to school. He asks his
newfound kid what he wants to wear today and the kid ends up going to
school dressed up in all kinda crazy stuff. Finally someone tells
Sandler that his kid is known as the "smelly weird kid" because he
comes to school in a scuba mask, flippers, and superman tights.
That's what you get when the kid makes choices without guidance.

Kids need some basic direction. Maybe the freedom to deviate from
that direction when needed, but leaving a kid's gender a blank slate
without any guidance is the equivalent of making their "favorite
color" determine what type of job they will have as an adult. If they
have no context to make a decision, they will randomly choose
something in the moment and be confused about why that determined
something so important for them.
