They certainly are not the same thing. Science is based on facts,
measurements, and observations. Religion (and I would lump mythology and
cults into this category) is based on faith with little or no facts,
measurements, or observations.  In that way they are very much not the same
thing. However, the origins of both science and religion seek to explain the
unexplainable.

Greek mythology saw the sun as the god Helios racing across the sky in his
Chariot. This has been explained in another way by science.

Cults like Scientology think aliens planted us here. Ultimately science may
show some variation of this to be correct, who knows.

Most major religions attempt to explain the origin of the universe, and
continue to revise their belief system as science proves certain variations
of their attempt right or wrong.

They certainly don't belong side by side in the classroom as equals, but
science and religion are inextricably linked. To some extent definitely
competing. Helios would still be driving across the sky if not for science.
