Uh .. they were. No one was left alive. Everyone who was in that restaurant 
at the time is now dead. If they had resisted, there's a chance they would 
still be alive. (Actually, I believe the reason only the staff was there 
was because it was late at night, as in at least midnight.)

And if that man had a gun to defend himself, would he have been beaten up? 
Getting beaten up severely can result in death as well. Maybe he would have 
been able to scare your friend's cousin off.

Phillip, I agree with what you're saying about trying not to use lethal 
force, but I think that if someone enters a person's home or store for a 
robbery, he should assume they intend to kill. Otherwise, G-d forbid, he 
may end up like those people in that fast food store.
