Uh .. they were. No one was left alive. Everyone who was in that restaurant at the time is now dead. If they had resisted, there's a chance they would still be alive. Maybe he would have been able to scare your friend's cousin off. Phillip, I agree with what you're saying about trying not to use lethal force, but I think that if someone enters a person's home or store for a robbery, he should assume they intend to kill. Otherwise, G-d forbid, he may end up like those people in that fast food store.
