As to your second sentence: I agree 100%, the NBA and NFL SHOULD fund
sports programs.

But to your first sentence, i disagree a bit. The purpose of college is
multifaceted. In a broad sense, i think it is to prepare people for their
futures. Notice i didn't say future CAREERS. That's a big part of it, yes,
but it's a time when people need to learn all sorts of life
lessons...responsibility, team work, dedication, self motivation..on and
on. A true LIFE education is not just math and science....it's social
interaction, competition, team work, etc. etc.

Sports are so much more than just bruisers and idiots taking their
testosterone for a spin. It has real value, both as a recreational and
educational tool.

So criticisms of college athletics being used as a tool by major sports
franchises are completely legit. But I don't think that should be used to
denigrate the sports themselves, or the valuable experience and enjoyment
that many student athletes gain by participation.
