My 7 year old son has been taking piano lessons for just over a year and has done very well with it (doesn't hurt that he's perfect pitch and perfect reproduction). He's asked about learning "basic guitar" (bass electric guitar) for a long time... before he started piano, and we're looking into the options for it.
I tinkered with the bass when I was in school but that was a long time ago. I was already a teenager as well. Since then, I've stuck to low brass (tuba). I know what to look for and ask for those. For strings and electric I'm lost. I thought I would ask the list to get your input on this. Some background on my son. He's 7, severe ADHD and gifted. He's small for his age, almost 4 ft and skinny. He's deceptively strong and is a bundle of energy. So for the questions - 1. What size guitar should we get him? I've seen 1/2, 3/4 and full size. 2. What brand? I would prefer to get him something that is going to last. We got our daughter a King trumpet on consignment when she picked that instrument and it was a wise investment. 3. What kind of amp? I've seen the one on ThinkGeek that clips to the belt, would that be enough for lessons and practice? 4. To make sure he doesn't destroy the thing, we're trying to figure some way to secure the equipment. Do they make cases that lock? 5. Aside from aspirin and earplugs, are we missing anything on the list? Thanks! Until Later! C.
