Thanks for the replies, folks!

Casey - I never said DJ'ing isn't a musical art form. What I've heard in
some clubs has been absolutely amazing! That said, I don't want to invest
in that much equipment (or storage space) quite yet. I still have a
Miraphone rotary valve tuba I want before I spoil the kids quite that much!

Vivec - The PS3 option is one I had not heard of before... and that might
be because we've got a Wii, not a PS3.

Jerry and LRS - Thanks for the brand recommendations! I'll have to look
further into their longevity. I've heard of Ibanez before from other
guitar players. Oh, and Jerry that electronic mute is a cool concept!
I've seen them before and if my daughter is interested we might consider
it for her birthday next year. We actually don't mind the sound of
her practising.

As for lessons, he's one that needs to have a warm body there with him.
More expensive but it'll make the purchase worth it. Right now there are
a number of places I know that have guitar lessons... in one case the wife
wants to run an independent background check on the guy (he made her feel
uncomfortable, something that's hard to do with my wife). The other is a
middle school music teacher.

One question that occurred to me after I sent this... should we start him
on a rhythm/6 string and then add/move to the 4 string bass? One of the
downsides that I have from playing tuba (and baritone and trombone in the
past) is that I never learned how to read treble clef. He reads both bars
now with his piano, I'm just concerned about pigeon-holing him into a bass
only world in the future.

Until Later!
