Israel is Canaan...remember it is what was called the land of milk and honey in the bible...the promised land? There is alsoa theory amongst many scholars that the Israelites were a subset of Canaanite society that rebelled or left for some reason, then after all the various captivities/slavery in Mesopotamia and Egypt, they came back to claim what was their original homeland, except this time as the rulers. The people that we call Palestinians today are descended from those Canaanites...mixed in with Arab blood (another Semitic tribe).
