"I blame Lincoln." I have read that Lincoln's death built the foundation for many of the social problems of the next hundred years. The reasoning goes that Lincoln would have been more effective and less authoritarian on reconstruction. This would have diffused many of the resentment that built up in the South. Instead, Johnson was a complete ass and made enemies all over the political spectrum.
