I don't think it's the main issue. It's more to do with preserving the family structure as we know it. Traditional families stay together longer and that's usually beneficial for the children. Yes, that's is rapidly changing which is probably why the fight is on, to preserve what'a left. A study last week noted LGBT make up less than 4% of the population, doesn't sound right, yet watching primetime TV one would assume it's 55%. They even have a show called "The New Normal" which seems to imply traditional marriage is outdated.
