Several years ago, I heard about some company was developing a virtual projected keyboard. It basically created a full size keyboard on any surface.
This thread reminded me of this so I just searched for "virtual projected keyboard". Turns out that they are out there now. If they catch on and work, it wouldn't be surprising to see them continually shrunk, made more economically, and included in portable devices.
