I prefer the onscreen keyboard as well.  On my old moto Droid, I never used
the slide out keyboard.

Where as I prefer an onscreen keyboard. Even when in portrait mode for
texting or email, I can type fast and accurately. The slide out keyboards,
or Blackberry keyboards are another issue. Fat-finger the crap out of them.
I admit that the single button on my iPhone was weird at first, but I have
had the phone since July and I really do like it. I had to relearn
everything of course because I was so used to android phones. One day I will
find the users manual and take a peek in it and see what else I can do with
it.
