Jerry, you are applying rational consideration to what is an irrational process.
"Pope isn't a "job" to the faithful...it's an appointment from God." Is it? The Pope is chosen by men. "To abdicate that is to turn away from a mission given by God, no matter the earthly reason. " This is completely off base. What if he feels God is leading him to step aside. "To suggest that Benedict knows better than God who should be Pope...is going to cause problems in that church." No one is suggesting any such thing. As stated above, what if through fervent prayer, he feels that God wants him to step aside. "None of this makes any sense in the real world of course but, then, neither does religion....so...." Religion doesn't make sense . . . I'd say atheism doesn't make sense. It is an indefensible argument. An atheist cannot know for certain there is no God without knowing everything. Knowing everything makes one a God. Hence an atheist equates himself with God, causing a contradiction. Agnosticism is a little different, but then it leaves the door open.
