"My understanding is that most of it they are buying from the rail companies (or whoever), which takes a whole lot of negotiation and quite a bit of money."
That sounds about right. There are lots of derelict rail lines that could be repurposed but the owners will not part with time. Amazing how valuable and unattainable an unused 40 yard wide 20 mile long stretch of land can be. They could really benefit people who want to bike without the risk of being clobbered by a texting driver. "One of the reasons I find the project so fascinating (aside from my proximity to it) is that the entire thing was a 'what if we could do this' thesis paper written by a GaTech student in the 90s. " Outstanding. It would be nice if the government would stop repaying its political backers by financing their failing green schemes and use some of the money for prizes in competitions between colleges. These competitions would be for solutions to real life problems. Unfortunately, that will not happen. It fosters independent thinking and it might cancel out some of the collegiate brainwashing that indoctrinates that government is the answer instead of part of the problem. Can you imagine a group saying that maybe taxes should be diverted from welfare to a project like the one in Atlanta? Or that the incarceration of pot smokers be shortened to save money that could be used on another project? "Atlanta has some of the shittiest mass transit that you've ever conceived of, so successfully adding this layer onto that will make a massive impact to the livability of the city's core." It's nice to see a common sense approach to making life better.
