Bruce one thing you may want to consider is getting a project manager cert - http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx
Given your skills as a senior NCO etc that would be a very good fit. And given the extra two years you now have it would be much easier getting the certification.
