It is quite sad how this issue is destroying the internet. Cloud companies
estimate they have lost about 50m USD in business from overseas so far, and
say they could lose even more.

Companies that provide secure or encrypted email services have closed
entirely as they cannot operate within the United States.

Almost everyone's data passes through the US at some point, so everyone
falls victim to the blanket collection of information, with no clue as to
how this information will be used in the future.

It's quite insane. It removes the ability for people to have frank and open
discussions across a medium that has done more to further such discussions
than anything else in modern history.

In an emotional post last night, Groklaw founder Pamela Jones laid out her
reasons for shuttering her internet legal salon. In the face of government
pressures placed on email providers like Lavabit and Silent Circle—and
those sites' decision to shut down rather than give up their clients'
information to the feds—she decided to pull the plug preemptively. Groklaw
couldn't operate, she explained, without email. And email is no longer safe
