I fully expected it to be this way... They probably only got servers based on XXX connections and didn't have the budget to start large and then scale down. I am sure there were many talks by the infrastructure team of "When oct 1 hits it is going to slashdot us in to oblivion" and the manager saying "well we will just see what happens but this is all we can buy".
