I bought a gateway Destination a few years ago, and signed up for their
UNLIMITED internet(56k) as well. The Destination is a computer with a 36
inch 800x600 monitor, TV tuner, DVD, remote, etc. The "off" button on the
remote turns off the screen/TV and puts the computer into suspend mode.

Fast forward 3 months. I get bill for $350 for 1 month internet access(the
first month I had the computer, and the end of their 3 month billing cycle
that I caught the last month of). Turns out that I was hitting the remote
to turn off the TV, but doing so kept the computer online/dialed-up.

Call gateway argue, argue, etc.

"It's unlimited access UP TO 100 hours." So the unlimited access is
limited. Hmmm...

They won't refund.

Fast forward one more month. Now I get a full three month billing cycle,
and the $1200 charge (for 3 months of 56k mind you) bounces.

I will never do business again, and ALWAYS steer people looking for a
computer away from gateway.

I think I'll have a cheese burger for lunch. Moo.

; )

Not to start anything but I will never recommend another gateway. I used to
work
for the govt and they had alot of gateways.. got great deals on them.. their
support and warranty service sucked. We had new gateways coming in DOA... in
the
box.... some of them took 6 months to get new motherboards shipped to us so
they
could be fixed and then GW wouldn't even send a tech to fix it for us.
Hopefully their service has improved in the last 4-5 years since I last
worked
on one, but I vowed they would never again get a recommendation from me.

Unless you are planning on building 100 computers, you won't be able to
match the prices of pre-packaged computers. Because they got bulk
discounts on every component.

I was able to get a 1.6 ghz Dell machine (512 megs RAM, 40 gig hard
drive, Windows 2000) for ~$800 bucks about 6 months ago. If you consider
the time it would take to build it, would I have been able to match
that? ( or even come close?) Nope!

(To refer to the person who mentioned warranty... Gateway had to replace
my monitor ~10 times over the past two years; I'm sure glad I wasn't
sucking up that cost myself).
