Unless you are planning on building 100 computers, you won't be able to match the prices of pre-packaged computers. Because they got bulk discounts on every component.
I was able to get a 1.6 ghz Dell machine (512 megs RAM, 40 gig hard drive, Windows 2000) for ~$800 bucks about 6 months ago. If you consider the time it would take to build it, would I have been able to match that? ( or even come close?) Nope! (To refer to the person who mentioned warranty... Gateway had to replace my monitor ~10 times over the past two years; I'm sure glad I wasn't sucking up that cost myself). >Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 13:02:34 -0400 >From: Michael Dinowitz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >Subject: New computer >Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >It's always when you don't want to that you have to get a new computer. >I've got to upgrade my home system and I've got a question for anyone here >who knows hardware; Is it better to buy a complete system or to build it. >I've got a quote of $1608 for a 2ghz Dell with 512 ram and 80 gig hard, >plus a 19 inch.
