Windows 7 Ultimate runs everything you would need and is not that much
more expensive.  The home version is marginal when it comes to loading
stuff like CF. I would defininately go with 64bit, and as much Ram and
hard drive space as you can afford.  I'm not comfortable enough with
SSD drives to recommend them.  Mean time to failure seems a bit too
high for me to trust them.

As for laptops, in spite of the fact that the pricing on them will be
good, don't buy  HP.  I have three, all of which have failed with the
same power supply issue which HP refuses to acknowledge or fix.

I like my Dell a lot, but the best laptop I've ever had is a Sony
Vaio.  I bought one in 1998.  It still works.
