They have a clear and historical right to a state but it would upset the nation building we're doing in Iraq, piss off the Turks, and be another target for radicals of some religion who will fight for any land to be returned to the religion in question. But the point is moot. A Kurdish state is coming and nothing the US can/will do is going to stop it.
