Religion rarely seems to be "getting somewhere" at a societal level.
Individual people? Maybe.

It's something that I really don't understand, honestly. I've seen religion
be very useful for individuals, helping them achieve a sense of peace and
stability, helping them sort out their lives, giving them a framework for
compassion.  And yet...it seems like any time religion starts to transcend
individuals and be used as a framework for large groups of people, it
becomes a very negative influence. Something changes.

Then again, I don't really understand religion in the first place, so this
probably will be an area that always mystifies me.
