Religion rarely seems to be "getting somewhere" at a societal level. Individual people? Maybe.
It's something that I really don't understand, honestly. I've seen religion be very useful for individuals, helping them achieve a sense of peace and stability, helping them sort out their lives, giving them a framework for compassion. And yet...it seems like any time religion starts to transcend individuals and be used as a framework for large groups of people, it becomes a very negative influence. Something changes. Then again, I don't really understand religion in the first place, so this probably will be an area that always mystifies me.
