If the thread is locked, it's never going to be posted to the list
anyway. I'm not sure of the details of the locking system, but I
inferred from Michael's post last week that the sender gets some sort
of notification.

The problem is receiving wrapped links, not sending them. Besides, I
do use a client that doesn't wrap. I'm fairly certain that most people
wont change their email clients because of an issue like wrapping
though.
The idea was that links could be logged as a sort of blog type link
logger. It would be interesting to have a page that showed all of
the links posted in the last few weeks with optional descriptions.
Finding a link I know someone, or even myself posted a few months ago
is nearly impossible if I can't recall something the post it came
through in, 6 months down the line.
Regarding the reliability, I see your point. Perhaps leave this up to
the poster? Since many of the longer links tend to be dynamic pages of
some sort, they will probably change, and permanence isn't really an
issue. Modifying the syntax to have an optional shorten keyword would work.

<link desc="fuzzy koala's threatened by RIAA" shorten>somehugelink</link>
