The states al have different gun laws. So while the gun may be illegal in Maryland,
it may not be in Virginia. That is one of the things that makes the debate more
difficult.

OK...well, I bow to your obviously superior knowledge about firearms. I'm
not sure what difference it makes though.

But surely your last point just underlines what I'm saying about stricter
gun laws, if you are suggesting this could be a legally owned weapon, which
incidentally contradicts your earlier point.

Out of interest, in this context, what are we defining as a legally or
illegally owned weapons, as I am unfamiliar with the intricacies of gun law
in different states in the US?

Actually Will, being pretty experienced I can tell you that there is little
difference. In many cases they are the very same rifle. The round this
current "Sniper" (I have a problem calling anyone taking body shots at 150
meters a sniper) is using is a 5.56 mm (.223 cal.). This is only a medium
round lighter than a 7.62 that is standard in the Army for snipers, and much
lighter than the 30-06 that was the mainstay of the original crop of Marine
snipers that brought the skill back to the modern battlefield.

The .223 is a very common round. It is the main round of the US Army, and
many hunting rifles are chambered in it. It is cheap and can be bought in
bulk. Basically this is probably a hunting rifle or an AR-15 (civilian
version of an M-16). Could be a lot of completely legal single shot or bolt
action rifles that were designed for hunting or sport shooting.

well, not being an expert I couldn't say for sure, but I would guess one the
main differences would be range and accuracy. Also, presumably a sniper
rifle is designed specifically to kill people.

Not sure what you are getting at.

Will,
If you would, please tell me the difference between a high powered sniper
rifle and a normal hunting rifle?

The toughest gun laws are surely those which prohibit all ownership of guns?
We are fortunate enough over here to have such gun laws, which were
tightened even further after Dunblane, where the protagonist was a member of
a gun club. The result is we haven't had another similar situation in this
country since. Although gun crime is on the increase over here, you are
still very unlikely to be mugged at gun point for example. It just seems
common sense to me that less guns in circulation means less gun crime.

As for this sniper, I think it would be very difficult for someone to
actually get hold of a high powered sniper rifle over here illegally,
because of our strict gun laws, and therefore much less likely that such a
thing would happen.

Has the argument over gun law come up as a result of this sniper over there?

Will

No.

He is committing murder which in and of itself is a crime. Using firearms
during the commission of a crime is a crime. Possession of a gun by many
people is a crime. Maryland has some of the toughest gun laws around, so
this gun is probably already illegal. So no. I don't think more gun law
would have stopped this at all.

Is it possible that if you weren't allowed to own guns, this might not have
happened?

Latest shooting is about 2 miles up the road from me. The place I am
staying right now was close to all of the original 4 or 5 shootings. Pretty
freaky. I had really hoped the arrests yesterday were pertinent. Oh well.

I am just pissed because my son isn't going to have a real Halloween. I
mean I think about all the kids (especially seniors trying to get into
university) who loose their sports and other extra curricular activities.
All the over time the police are putting in, all the extra traffic and
hassle. I board at the Glenmont station to ride the metro to work. As I
was pulling in this morning a virtual army of patrol cars and such went
screaming by. I am so sick of this. One person in the right place and time
and all this goes away.

I hope they catch this guy soon, and I hope he makes it nice and easy and
tries to fight arrest.

Sniper my ass. Ask me again why I think private citizens should be able to
carry guns.

Unfortunately the arrested turned out to be a couple of Guatemalan migrant
workers who were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
