I also don't see the logic in saying that more legal guns = less 
victims.  I'm pretty sure that guy stepping off the bus would still have 
been shot even if he were carrying a concealed weapon, but had it been 
harder to get a gun in the first place, that might have detered the 
sniper.  Do we really want to go back to the days of the old west when 
everyone carried a gun and was ready to use it.  

I'm convinced that a lot of people don't need to be on the road because 
they drive so dangerously, even though there are tests and licenses for 
driving.  These are the same people who could also apply for concealed 
weapons permits.  Doesn't that scare you just a bit.  What happens when 
a car backfires and suddenly a firefight erupts.  Guns are just one of 
those things whose consequences of misuse or accidental use are too 
lethal for everyday carrying.

Lightsabers are the solutions.  A more elegant weapon for a more 
civilized time. :)
