Yes, guns are tools. They are tools used by both the good guys and the bad guys. If guns are so evil, why do cops carry them?
Here in Florida, concealed carry of a firearm is legal with a license. When the law was being considered originally, the anti-self defense lobby (and that's what they are) cried that Florida would become the Gunshine State as citizens drew down on each other for parking places. That neighbors would be slaughtering each other over lawn mower noise. The blood would flow heavy in the streets. It has never materialized. It has never occurred in any state with concealed carry. None of this happened. In fact, the crime rate amongst licensed concealed carriers is lower per capita than it is with law enforcement officers. Civilian gun carriers commit less crime than cops. And that includes crimes not involving guns. I respect your hatred for guns, that is your right. Hate is Constitutionally protected. I hate the fact that it's legal to murder an unborn child. But no one is forcing you to own or carry a gun. And I see no difference between ballistic fingerprinting and tire tread registration. Absolutely none. Both are severe violations of our rights. Be grateful that your driver's license photo is not being used across your state in ciminal lineups. Be grateful that your face isn't being exposed to a traumatized rape victim in your town. The one thing that has kept this nation from becoming a police state is the pre-emptive belief that you are not guilty. That the cops can not bother you without just cause. Cops stopping you on the street asking for your id when you are not a suspect in a crime is harrassment. A cop, coming to your door, asking you to produce your gun, and to prove where you were at a specific date and time is harrassment. It is a basic tenet of a police state. And the difference between driving a car and owning and carrying a gun is that one is a priviledge and other is a right. I don't need anyones permission to exercise my rights. Unfortunately, like most things, there's rarely a middle ground. In this case, I don't think that what you are saying furthers Moore's thoughts. Yes, cars kill people and are used in crimes. Yes, criminals wear shoes and have fingerprints. The difference, at least in my mind and it may be (ha!) biased, is that guns have no legitimate purpose in the hands of those committing the crime. They are the tool that allows rage to explode into disaster. No, guns don't kill people, but they are a tool used by people. A very efficient tool. I might decide to put a nail in a piece of wood, but absent a hammer I'll have to think twice about it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/index.cfm?forumid=5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_community Signup for the Fusion Authority news alert and keep up with the latest news in ColdFusion and related topics. http://www.fusionauthority.com/signup.cfm
