The problem is that your argument doesn't really hold water in today's society. The US government (love it or hate it) is one of the most stable in world (as are more developed countries). The "threat" from the government (at least any threat that would require armed response) is so small that the argument for maintaining sych vigilance is thin indeed. I'm also squarely in the camp of the "well regulated militia" - something that vast, unregulated gun ownership does not gauruntee. Also, where should this stop? If we ever have to "defend ourselves from the government" could we? I would say, no. So, to ensure that we could, should anybody be allowed to own fully automatic weapons, flame throwers, grenades, and surface-to-air missles? To quote George Carlin: "We're fucked if we ever have to go up against the army" I would also argue that a nation full of scared suburbanites with firearms is perhaps a key ingrediant for "all breaking loose".
