Try running a planted aquarium. To do it successfully takes a bit of effort,
but once you get it set up it's well worth it. I have a beautiful 55gallon
tank filled with live plants and fish in my office at home. It's a great
stress reliever and brainstorming tool in addition to just making the room
look nice.

I've retro-fitted my aquarium hood with 110Watts of compact fluorescent
lighting (up from 30 watts of cheap lighting), and I've built a
do-it-yourself Co2 system with a 2 liter bottle, yeast, and sugar. I can now
see my plants producing oxygen because all of the elements are in place for
some good photosynthesis to go on in there. The fish love it too since the
plants act as another filter to eat their waste.

You might not want the extra lighting and Co2 if you don't feel like digging
in there every week to trim around, the plants will grow without that - just
slower, and you probably won't see the oxygen bubbles I was talking about.

One benefit in doing this is you're forced to pick up some chemistry/biology
- but it's not like school, you actually have a purpose in learning the
stuff.

If it sounds interesting - this is the cf-talk of planted aquaria:
