Singapore requires all males to do 2 years of national service when they turn 18.(I don't think females should be excluded if we adopt it in the US, good for all people)
I think this would reap great benefits across the board(greater personal responsibility, discipline, etc). I know I gained a lot as a person from my two years(US army, not Singapore). I don't think this is exactly what the senator is suggesting, though.
