There's a lot to say about joining the military, at least for one 
enlistment term. The benefits are very good, funding for college, you get a 
better shot at government jobs, etc. There's also the discipline that is 
instilled.

However I do not think that mandatory service is the way to go. Volunteers 
make better professional soldiers than conscripts. Given the level of 
skills that are needed in the military, I'd rather have enthusiastic 
volunteers than reluctant conscripts. If there has to be some form 
mandatory service, the way to do it would be to have it be non-military - 
like Americorps - , with a strictly volunteer military component. Perhaps 
give some incentive to join the military - shortened service time, college 
funding etc.
