IMO the white background is a detractor, especially with the red lining and bars.
The black is difficult to read over the red... and the red's a bit too bright. Ideas from the other site: go with a muted canvas of colors, come up with a cammo pattern of colors and define them for the site (stylesheets)... the "pop" of the other site is in it's color co-ordination.
