I went to a college with a high gay population -- between 25% and 30% were
'out'. I had a significant number of friends and close aquaintances that
were gay or lesbian. Neither group, as far as I ever noticed, was more
likely to promiscuous than the rest of my friends.
When you get right down to it, there was a smaller correlation between
homosexuality and promiscutity than between being a theatre major and
promiscuity. (Heh, theatre sluts.)
I think part of the myth (well, I think it's a myth -- you think what you
want) of homosexual sluttiness has to do with the flirting patterns. When
your competition is also a potential mate, apparently flirting is as much a
part of the defense as it is part of the offense. Also, there's some
expectation of flirting -- gays are expected to be fruity flirtatious
outrageous people, and so sometimes they play the part. But that's just
from my own observations and discussions with friends who swing that way.
Who knows what the real truth is?
Anyway, to make a long story short (too late!) I don't think there's much
reality to "a high proportion of people that live a 'gay' lifestyle have
multiple sex partners".
